Peachtree Road United Methodist Church - Atlanta, GA

Today we went to Peachtree Road United Methadist Church. The picture above is of the sanctuary or nave. The nave is in a gothic style. The round window is called a rose window. It is facing East so the sun will be shining through during the morning services. 

Roselawn- Home of Sam Jones

This is the home of Sam P. Jones. He was a famous preacher from Cartersville, GA. It is called Roselawn because there are 240 rose bushes on the lawn. The house was originally a two room cottage. Over time the original owners expand the house. When Mr. Jones bought the house he had it lifted up and a new first floor was built underneath!

Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Today we did an historic downtown walking tour of Atlanta. This is the doorway to the Candler Building. This building was built by Asa Candler in 1905. The building tells the story of the western world with that incudes Confederate solder's with western figures.

This is the Flatiron building. It was first known as the English-American building. It was built in 1897 and was one of the first skyscrapers in Atlanta. 

Tennessee Aquarium

When it opened in 1992, the River Journey Building at the Tennessee Aquarium was the largest fresh water aquarium in the world. The glass peaks on top of the building possibly represent the mountains in the area.

Grandparents home in Albemarle, NC

According to the book "Stanly County: The Architectural Legacy of a Rural North Carolina County", this home is Colonial Revival with a Spanish Revival roof cladding. Built by the local Holbrook family of builders for the Starnes family it was finished in 1928. The house is modeled on the one below, also believed to have been finished in 1928, that is found in Shelby, North Carolina. 

 

 

Kennesaw First Baptist Church

This afternoon we stopped in downtown Kennesaw to see the progress of the construction of the new part of Kennesaw First Baptist Church.

     

Millennium Gate Museum

We visited the Millennium Gate today. It is located at Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Georgia. The top picture is a view of the arch from the villa. It is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch and based on the Arch of Titus. Inside is a museum of Georgia history. Our guide allowed us to  visit the top so we could see the wonderful views. One of the fun facts is that if you stand at a certain point in front of the arch you will sound like a robot!

Kennesaw Mountain Kiosk

 

Today we went hiking again but this time at Kenasaw Mountain N.B.P. They are building a kiosk\bus stop. The roof will be metal and the color will be similar to the solar panels on the Visitor Center.

Bethany Bridge

 

Today we went hiking at Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville, GA, and took some pictures of Bethany Bridge. This is a truss bridge that is located off I-75 at exit 285.
